Welcome to Spirit Rift.
In the year 2097 scientist found the portal between our world and the spirit world. They vainly thought the human population would finally have answers to their most questioned ideas and theories.
But for every action it has an opposite and equal reaction, the ghost had their own wants and ideas, they began flooding through the rip in space and time.
Each had their own personality, just like humans. The devilish and the harmless took their toll on the planet Earth. They realized how to open rifts into other worlds, of which more and more humans and spirits alike escaped into which ever world was their preference.
Soon time it's self was affected by the portals. In some areas time would completely stop, or would rush by, literally, in a blink of the eye. Not only were spirits making their way about as they pleased, humans were too. They spoke to loved ones, to hated ones, to historical ones and to ones that they never knew existed. Possession of human bodies was easy for those spirits with an evil soul, at times this back fired as the soul of that human was too strong and instead took control of them.
These half spirit half humans were named Phantoms. They assumed the duty of controlling the out breaks of spirits and the closing of the new rift openings. The Phantoms keep their identities a secret for they could be a target if certain groups of both humans and spirits were to discover their particular existence.

James was warm now. The body heat had restored his circulation, and he had managed to fall asleep for a few hours, before waking up the sleeper beside him for a second round. Fully satisfied after his three minute tumble, he desired a cigarette to complete his contentment. He got up out of bed and finding his pants in the dark, put them on before walking out of the bedroom. James tried to close the door behind him,for some reason it felt heavy. He turned on the light, and his eyes were drawn to the gory sight of the bloody flesh of Vincent. 'Holy crap," he yelled. Seeing the note on the floor, he picked it up reading the words aloud. "The cost of failure".
James ran into the bedroom, finished dressing and retrieving the note ran from the building.

Vincent walked over to the door of the room James had entered. He was dissatisfied with how James was taking this. He had to send a stronger message. Vincent had been happy with his current body, but he had to show James that failure was not tolerated. He left his inhabitant body and dragged it onto the wall opposite the door. He took the knife James had left and stabbed his old body with it, leaving the knife in its chest. He then wrote a short note in with the blood on a piece of paper, "The Cost of Failure". He left it on the ground and left.

James immediately pulled the knife from his shaking hand. Vincent was pure evil, the coldness still filled his body. His teeth were chattering, he stood up and looked at his hand. There was no blood, the chill had frozen his blood supply, which was a small mercy at least. He needed warmth and his hand to be repaired before the blood started oozing out. Remembering one of his “girls” lived closeby,he went to her apartment and pounded his other fist loudly on the door. Luckily for her she answered the door straight away. He had her attend to his hand, attaching butterfly strips to where the knife had invaded his skin. Now it was time for the matter of warmth to be seen to. James led her into the bedroom, turning the light off and closing the door as he proceeded to use their bodies to produce body heat.

In Vincent's opinion, the most powerful motivator is the world was fear.
"I see", he said. Then he sent out almost all of the dark energy he had within him, hovering it in the room. Viktor's drink froze. The lights flickered. Vincent's cigarette went out. A kitchen knife resting on the counter nearby frosted over, as did the windows.
"You feel that?", Vincent asked, "Bit of a chill... What do you know about death, Mr. Viktor?"
Not waiting for an answer, he went on.
"Death is not a pleasant experience Mr. Viktor. There is no goal to it, no end. Just an pointless drifting... non-existence. And very...very... very cold"
He took the frozen knife and in a swift movement, pinned Viktors hand to the counter with it, also transferring the rest of the cold energy he had through the knife.
"It's the Mayor or you, Mr. Viktor.", Vincent said, "Make your decision."
Saying no more, he got up and walked out, leaving Viktor to sort himself out.

James preferred being a petty criminal rather than a murderer. He was beginning to regret becoming involved with this strange man. He was happy with the money he had made earlier,he did not want to become a hitman. James decided he wanted out, killing the mayor was too big a deal for him.Having made his decision he went to the address on the paper, sat at the bar and ordered a drink, and waited with trepidation for the time to come to face VIncent and tell him that he wanted out.

"Don't get caught", Vincent replied, disappearing into the shadows. Had he overestimated James? Possibly... if James failed or not, the point would still get through. It was time for change in Kaora.
